As everyone knows, Queen Elizabeth II passed away on 8 September at 96.
And the State Funeral was held in accordance with the detailed funeral plan which was created as early as 1960s and revised many times since.
The plan was called “Operation London Bridge”, and the code phrase used to convey the first news of her death was “London Bridge is down.”

So, this month’s mother goose is “London Bridge is broken down” (or more common title “London Bridge is falling down”).

This nursery rhyme is one of the best known children’s songs in English language.
Small children in Japan sing it (or its Japanese version) while playing the arch game.

Most of Japanese are familiar with only the first stanza, I think.
Very long actually, having 12 stanzas!

London Bridge is broken down,
Broken down, broken down,
London Bridge is broken down,
My fair lady.

Build it up with wood and clay,
Wood and clay, wood and clay,
Build it up with wood and clay,
My fair lady.

Wood and clay will wash away,
(repetition)

Build it up with bricks and mortar,
(repetition)

Bricks and mortar will not stay,
(repetition)

Build it up with iron and steel,
(repetition)

Iron and steel will bend and bow,
(repetition)

Build it up with silver and gold,
(repetition)

Silver and gold will be stolen away,
(repetition)

Set a man to watch all night,
(repetition)

Suppose the man should fall asleep,
(repetition)

Give him a pipe to smoke all night,
(repetition)

(London Bridge is falling down song)

The lyrics were first printed in the oldest collection of nursery rhymes “Tommy Thumb’s Pretty Song Book” (1744) and became popular.
The words were different from the modern version.
They have changed over the years as in many other traditional rhymes.

(The original text in Tommy Thumb’s book)
London Bridge is broken down,
Dance over my Lady Lee;
London Bridge is broken down,
With a gay lady.

How shall we build it up again,
Dance over my Lady Lee,
How shall we build it up again,
With a gay lady.

(continue to the 9th stanza)

As you might probably guess, it was a dance song.
People danced along to it until 1820s.
The original melody was quite different from today’s one as well.
Today’s melody and the children’s arch game appeared first in the USA in the 1880s.

London Bridge itself has a long history.
Built, broken, burnt and rebuilt again and again like in the rhyme.

(London Bridge: A journey through time)

The Medieval London Bridge (the first stone bridge)
1209 ~ 1831
Survived for 600 years!
Many houses and shops (about 130) built on the bridge.

The new London Bridge (the second stone bridge)
1831 ~ 1972
(An American estate developer bought this London Bridge!
The bridge was taken apart stone by stone, transferred to the USA, and then reconstructed in Arizona.)

The modern London Bridge (concrete)
1973 ~ present

(Disney’s film “The truth about mother goose (1957)”

Now there are more than 10 bridges over the Thames in London.
London Bridge had been the only one until Westminster Bridge was constructed in 1750, though.
So vital for the Londoners!

See you at たどくらぶ.

A kestrel for a knave

St. Paul's CathedralとLondon Bridge。

History lovers

This month I’ll talk about some rhymes about “Charing Cross” and “Whitehall.”
The places are in the center part of London and important in the British history.
You probably learned at school about the Civil Wars (or the Puritan Revolution), the execution of King Charles I (1649), the Commonwealth (1653 – 1659) and the Restoration (1660),

The first nursery rhyme is this:

As I was going by Charing Cross,
I saw a black man upon a black horse;
They told me it was King Charles the First-
Oh dear, my heart was ready to burst!

(YouTube: King Charles Statue)

I guessed it was about a ghost of King Charles I (reign; 1625 – 1649) because he was beheaded near Charing Cross.
No.
It refers to the statue of King Charles I which stands at Charing Cross.
London’s oldest bronze statue having an interesting story like this;

The statue was commissioned in 1633 by Charles’s Lord Treasurer for his garden in South London.
After the execution of King Charles I, the statue was ordered to be broken by the Parliament.
A metalsmith in Covent Garden bought it.
He was supposed to melt it down, but he secretly kept it hidden.
After the Restoration (1660) the statue was discovered and purchased by the king’s son, King Charles II.
In 1675 it was erected at Charing Cross.

The statue is facing down Whitehall towards his execution place, Banqueting House.

The second nursery rhyme is so horrible.
Are you ready?

King Charles the First walked and talked
Half an hour after his head cut off.

(YouTube: Off with his head)

The last nursery rhyme is a riddle.

Purple, yellow, red, and green,
The king cannot reach it, nor yet the queen;
Nor can Old Noll, whose power’s so great:
Tell me this riddle while I count eight.

(Solution: a rainbow)

According to THE OXFORD DICTIONARY OF NURSERY RHYMES,
“Old Noll” was the Royalists’ nickname for Oliver Cromwell.
King Charles I and the queen are mentioned here in the present tense, so it seems that he was not executed yet (Jan. 1649.)
The Royalists didn’t consider Cromwell a figure of power compared to the king until Cromwell began to represent the Army (June 1647.)
So it seems reasonable to guess this rhyme was composed in 1648.

See you soon hopefully at たどくらぶ.

ms.mikanです。
私はAnsony Mcgowanの”I AM THE MINOTAUR"を紹介しました。

Oh, the brave (or grand) old Duke of York,
He had ten thousand men;
He marched them up to the top of the hill,
And he marched them down again.

And when they were up, they were up,
And when they were down, they were down,
And when they were only half-way up,
They were neither up nor down.

People have much debated which Duke of York this rhyme referred to.
There are three candidates.
One of them is Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany (1763 -1827),
the second son of King George III and a younger brother of King George IV.
He was a commander-in-chief of the British Army during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars.

There is no evidence of such useless military operations (marching his men up and down the hill for nothing).
And most of the countries over which he went was flat with no hills.

As a matter of fact, there was another nursery rhyme before in the 17th century.
This older rhyme was about a French king, Henri IV (reign 1589 – 1610) and very popular among British people.

The King of France went up the hill
With forty thousand men,
The King of France came down the hill,
And ne’er went up again.

It is said that someone changed these old lines to make a British adaptation.

There is a bronze statue of Prince Frederick in London, very near to the statue of King Charles I, which I talked about at the last たどくらぶ.

(Joolz Guides)

The statue stands on a very tall column.
The total height of the monument to the top of the statue is about 42 meters.
The Duke was a good commander in the military life, but his private life was full of scandals, and he wasted quite a lot of money.
He died with 2 million pounds in debt.
People said that his statue was placed on such a high column to avoid the claims of his creditors.

The Duke of York nursery rhyme is popular among children as an action song.

Or you might lift and lower a small child or baby like this:

“Duke of York” title has usually been given to the second son of monarchs since the 15th century.
The current title holder is Prince Andrew, who has a bad reputation for his sexual assault on a teenager.
I found this harsh adaptation made by someone in the media.
Everyone knows that it is based on the famous nursery rhyme.

The grand old Duke of York,
He had twelve million quid.
He gave it to someone he never met,
For something he never did.

See you soon at たどくらぶhopefully.

Oh, the brave old Duke of York"というマザーグースを
