たどくらぶ 開催のお知らせと報告

10月8日（日）の 『たどくらぶ』 の報告です。

参加者は5名でした。
当日、ツイッターで様子を紹介していたので、そのリンクをはります。
相変わらず色んな話題がでて、とっても楽しい時間でした。
次回は、11月12日（日）です。この日は技術担当不在のため、対面参加のみとなります。


Rさんのイギリス旅行の戦利品。湖水地方のHerdwick sheep のtweedのリュック。茶色い毛は、ラムの時にしか取れない、一度きりの色、とのこと。

今月のマザーグースは“Ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross”です。


Ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross,
To see a fine lady upon a white horse;
Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes,
And she shall have music wherever she goes.

It is often sung by mothers to their babies as they bounce on their knees.
Or children sing this song while galloping on a “cock-horse”, a stick toy with a horse’s head.

This rhyme has some alternative versions as in many other nursery rhymes:

Ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross,
To buy little Johnny a galloping horse;
It trots behind and it ambles before;
And Johnny shall ride till he can ride no more.


Ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross,
To see what Tommy can buy;
A penny white loaf,
A penny white cake,
And a two-penny apple-pie.


Banbury is a little town in Oxfordshire, England.
It was once a market town and had some stone crosses.
The crosses were broken down by the Puritans,
and later a new one was put up.

A statue of the “fine lady” stands now near the new Banbury Cross.
It is not known, however, who the “fine lady” was.
Some say it was Queen Elizabeth I while other say it was Lady Godiva.

The town is also famous for the “white cake”, a flat oval pastry filled with currants, peels and spices.

11月12日（日）の 『たどくらぶ』 の報告です。

参加者は4人でした。

少ない人数でしたが、
読み聞かせあり、ブックトークあり、旅行談ありと
いつものように楽しく過ごしました。

多読生活も10年あまりになる人ばかりだったので、
「多読をやっていてよかった」と感じた瞬間や、
「しばらくぶりに読み返した本が以前より味わえている」と感じた瞬間などについても
話がはずみました。

私はいつものようにマザーグースを紹介しました。
イギリスのBanburyという町が舞台の”Ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross”。

Banburyには、マザーグースの中に出てくる白馬に乗つた女の人の像が立っていたり、
毎年Hobby Horse Festival が開かれたりしているそうです。
このマザーグースを大切にしているのが感じられます。
いつか訪れて名物のwhite cakeを頬張ってみたい！

cambric: a type of thin white cloth made from cotton or linen （シャンブレー）
yonder: over there
thorn: hawthorn (サンザシ)
ram: a male sheep
sickle: a tool with a curved blade and a short handle

This nursery rhyme dates back to 1780s or older.
Joseph Ritson (1752-1783) collected British nursery songs and rhymes and published a book titled “Gammer Gurton’s Garland.”

Many people have said that the origin of the nursery rhyme was a traditional Scottish folk ballad “The Elfin Knight.” (17th century or much older?)
Here a young girl hears an “Elfin Knight” blowing his horn and she wants to marry him. One night he comes to her and tells her that he would only marry her if she shapes a sark (shirt) without any cut or heme.

The Elfin Knight ballad has a huge number of variants.
You might know of “Scarborough Fair” (1966, sung by Simon and Garfunkel.) Their song is considered a relatively recent variant, which includes a sort of messenger and a reference to “Scarborough Fair.”

こんにちは、ms.mikanです。
12月10日（日）の 『たどくらぶ』 の報告です。

参加者は7人でした。(しばらく仕事の都合でお休みしていたメンバーとそのご主人がゲストとして参加して下さいました。）

まずはマザーグースにはじまり、ブックトーク、旅行談ありで、いつものように楽しく過ごせました。

ゲストの方は、大学の英語の先生で、特に「英語大苦手、大嫌い」の生徒達にI can readシリーズや、ORTを多読の三原則にそって読んでもらうことから始め、最終的に先生にThank you cardをくれるほど、生徒が英語を楽しむようになったことを話していただきました。
生徒達はやはりORTがお気に入りだったそうです。そして、ゼミで使っていた興味をそそる本やDVDを寄付していただきました。こうやって多読の良さを感じてもらえ、その輪が広がっているのは嬉しい限りでした。

私は日直でありながら、遅刻という大失態をやらかしました。その上、手ぶら参加でした。
しかし、今年、個人的にお世話になった久しぶりのメンバーとそのご主人にもお目にかかれ、ついでに自分の主人も引っ張り出して、個人的に大興奮、楽しい今年最後の「たどくらぶ」になりました。
何でも受け入れてくれる寛容さ、自由さ！やはり多読仲間はいいですね。

今月のマザーグースはDing dong bellです。

Ding, dong, bell,
Pussy’s in the well.
Who put her in?
Little Johnny Green.
Who pulled her out?
Little Tommy Stout.
What a naughty boy was that,
To try to drown poor pussy cat,
Who never did him any harm,
And killed the mice in his father’s barn.

This rhyme dates back to the 16th century England.
The organist of Winchester Cathedral first recorded the following canon which was supposed to be the origin of this nursery rhyme.

Jacke boy, ho boy newes,
The cat is in the well.
Let us ring now for her Knell,
Ding dong ding dong bell.

“Knell” means the sound of a bell rung to announce a death or a funeral.
So the cat is dead in the first version.

Later new lines were added in which the cat was rescued by another boy.

Recently some people have claimed that children could be affected by the violence of this rhyme and attempted to reform the rhyme further into a more harmless one.

Who’ll bring her in?
Little Tommy Thin.
What a jolly boy was that
To get some milk for pussy cat
Who ne’er did any harm
But played with mice in
His father’s barn.
