たどくらぶ 開催のお知らせと報告

こんにちは、RuiRuiです。
今月のたどくらぶで紹介するマザーグースは"Poly put the kettle on”です。

Polly put the kettle on,

The tune which the rhyme is sung to is “Jenny’s Bawbee.”

In the 17th and 18th centuries, tea was so much expensive that only the upper class people could have it.
Polly (Mary) and Sukey (Susan) are probably the names of servants.
By the 19th century tea had reached the working class.

There is another version like this:

Polly put the kettle on,
Sally blow the bellows strong,
Molly call the muffin man,
We’ll all have tea.

Recently I heard of the controversy about adding a pinch of salt to tea, which was caused by an American chemist’s new book.
The USA Embassy in London posted a statement on X as follows:
“We want to ensure the good people of the U.K. that the unthinkable notion of adding salt to Britain’s national drink is not official United States policy.
U.S. Embassy will continue to make tea in the proper way – by microwaving it.”

And then the U.K. Cabinet Office quickly responded to it.
They posted their statement on X, too.
“Tea can only be made using a kettle.”

Do you make tea by using a kettle or a microwave?
A kettle definitely!

連休中ということもあり少人数でしたが、
結局３時間も話していました…

僕は、久しぶりに読書を再開して、
カーネギー賞のショートリストに入っていた Needle を読み始めたという報告をしました。


3月は多読まつりがあるのでお休みです。

今月のマザーグースは
“As I was going to St. Ives”です。


As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives;
Each wife had seven sacks,
Each sack had seven cats,
Each cat had seven kits:
Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,
How many were there going to St. Ives?


This is a riddle rhyme.
Can you get the answer?

You might probably begin adding and multiplying the mentioned numbers in order to calculate the total.
Be careful, however, this is a trick question!

The answer is one (only “I”, the narrator.)
The man and his wives were met by the narrator on his way to St. Ives.
So they are thought to be leaving (not going to) St. Ives.







When this rhyme was first published in the 18th century, there were some places called St. Ives.
It is now generally thought that the rhyme refers to “St. Ives, Cornwall” or “St. Ives, Cambridgeshire.”

こんにちは、RuiRuiです。

4月14日（日）の 『たどくらぶ』 の報告です。
参加者は全部で6人(zoom参加1名含む）でした。

参加メンバーのうち３人が今年中にイギリス旅行を計画しているとあって、
地図を見ながらいろいろと情報交換をしました。

そのほか、最近観たNetFlixの映画情報や、イギリスのビスケットにちなんだ詩の読み聞かせもあり、３時間ほど楽しみました。

私は、As I was going to St. Ivesというマザーグースを紹介するとともに、
今読んでいるCranfordという本の話もしました。
この話はBBCのドラマで知っているメンバーもいて、
どこがおもしろかったかについて紹介しあいました。

数年前、イギリスのプリンス・アンドリューと性犯罪者のエプスタインの親交が問題になった時、Newsnightが独占インタビューに成功。
当時話題になったそのインタビューが、どうやって実現したか、という映画。
エンタメとしては面白かっけど、それでいいのか、という憤りのほうが大きかった！

ホームレスのワールドカップというのがあるらしい。
軽くて、明るくて、プロットも手際よくて、、、
でも一番は、イングランドの監督役のビル・ナイが、めっちゃビル・ナイだったのが面白かった！
